Description :
  • Operates gas and/or diesel heavy trucks with trailer units by driving transportation trucks with high-bed, low-bed, or tilt-bed trailers with winch as well as dump trucks, helitenders, fuel tenders, heavy water tenders, etc.; loading/unloading fuel; hauling heavy equipment, operational and disabled fire department vehicles, and freight (e.g., bulldozers, fire engines, crew buses, loaders, backhoes, excavators, and Fire Department supplies/containers); observing best practices of driving, adhering to all laws of traffic, and using red lights and sirens when necessary to support Fire Department operations.
  • Conducts inspection of trucks, trailers, helitenders, etc. by examining exterior, cab interior, engine compartment, undercarriage, tires, brake system, safety equipment, etc. to report identified defects to supervisor and/or mechanic, identify preventive maintenance needs, request repairs, and to confirm the safety of the vehicle and equipment during transport.
  • Loads and unloads equipment from trailer by determining best location for loading/unloading; utilizing forklifts to load and unload freight, working with other Transportation Truck Drivers, equipment operators, and Fire Suppression Aids; chaining, securing, and unchaining equipment from trailer.
  • Applies safety protocols when delivering heavy equipment, operational and disabled Fire Department vehicles, and freight for Fire Department operations.
  • Plans route of transportation by communicating with the supervisor, on-duty equipment operator, and Fire Suppression Aids; reviews maps; screens for traffic delays and detours; obtains permits when needed to haul oversized (e.g., height, weight, and width) loads, and coordinates with pilot cars and escorts to establish the safest and most efficient course of travel.
  • Participates in briefings by communicating with other truck drivers, unit supervisors, on-duty equipment operators, and Fire Suppression Aids. Provides input to the supervisor to determine staffing assignments, driving routes, and reporting structure in order to establish shift assignments and priorities.
  • Prepares forms (e.g., apparatus checklist, and Bill of Lading Daily Sheet) by completing all required fields, tracking preventative maintenance schedule, identifying defects and repair needs, reporting findings, submitting paperwork to supervisor/mechanic, and filing all required paperwork in the appropriate log book(s) to provide documentation required by vehicle code.
  • Attends various Wildland Fire trainings by participating in classroom and practical training, passing standard examinations, and obtaining the required certifications to acquire a qualifications card and meet federal, state, and local agency requirements for performing work on emergency Wildland incidents.
Requirements :

Three (3) years of full time paid experience driving trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of at least 80,000 pounds.

  • Experience should include the loading, unloading and hauling of oversized heavy construction equipment or freight, including special permit loads.
  • Experience should include driving on all types of roads and terrain with the ability to determine appropriate routes for conditions of roads, bridges, grades, etc.
  • Experience should include utilizing high-bed, low-bed, and tilt-bed trailers with a Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 80,000 pounds.
